Remembering LeRoi Moore
Today we have lost a true musical legend. I feel as though someone in my family just passed away since I’ve been listening and basically worshiping every member of the Dave Matthews Band since sometime in 1996.
I remember a handfull of gigs I played with Shekere 3, an original band that followed in the stylings of DMB and others of the time. There’s been at least a few shows we played where we had a sax player trying to mimic LeRoi’s lines in songs like #41, Stay (Wasting Time) and of course my favorite (probably of all) Rapunzel/Pantala Naga Pampa. They really are some of the most beautiful sax lines I’ve ever heard — and a big reason why I’ve always loved DMB.
Of all the times I’ve seen the band I’ll never forget being at Soldier Field and hearing #41 from the main floor about 30 rows back from the stage. I had tears in my eyes then and just thinking about it brings them back a little…
Here’s to you, LeRoi for making such a difference in so many peoples’ lives — and making some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard.
